Lab Members

Dr. Brian J. Enquist                  Principal Investigator

Dr. Brad "Braulio" Boyle      Postdoctoral Research Associate

Dr. Boyle is interested in patterns of diversity - including biogeography, and macroecology and plant systematics within and across plant assemblages. Brad is an instructor for the Organization for Tropical Studies (OTS) and studies tropical tree diversity especialy montane forests.

Laura Crumbacher                    Undergraduate Research Technician

Laura is a junior EEB major and is interested in soil-plant interactions in desert legumes. She is an assistant to the lab's projects on plant stoichiometry and energetics and she enjoys a good day out in the field. Laura is also a reaserch assistant with the lab's work on plant functional traits and ecosystem energetics at the Rockly Mountain Biological Lab in Gothic Colorado

Dr. Andrew Kerkhoff        Postdoctoral Research Associate

Dr. Kerkhoff studies the macroecology of plant distibution, life history, and physiology. He is especially interested in connecting plant stoichiometry, allometric scaling and ecosystem dynamics. Drew's work includes quantifying the variability in plant functional traits and ecosystem attributes across elevational gradients in Colorado and tropical Latin America. As of fall 2005 Drew has now landed a real job as an Assistant Professor at Kenyon College. He has a joint position in the departments of Biology and Mathematics. Way to go Drew! But we sure do miss you! You can visit Drew at his new website

Christine Lamanna        Doctoral Student

Christine comes to our lab with a background in physics and astonomy. She is interested in macroecology, scaling and spatial patterns in ecosystems - especially arid ecosystems.

Megan McCarthy                                         Doctoral Student

Megan studies how phylogeny, physiology and life-history differences affect whole plant energetics and biomass allocation

Dr. Jason Pither                                         Postdoctoral Research Associate

Jason comes to our lab from Dr. Lonnie Aarssen's lab at Queen's University. Jason's current research uses an eco-informatics and computational approach to more accurately describe macroecological (continental to global extent) patterns in plant systems. He utilizes spatial null-modelling methods to evaluate alternative explanatory hypotheses for the patterns observed. Jason is also a proud member of the southern outpost of Canadian citizens co-founded by Jason and Brad Boyle.

Chuck Price                         Doctoral Student

Chuck studies plant allometry, morphology and architecture. He is interested in allometric scaling models and understanding the diversity of plant form in linking the scaling of abundance, size, and diversity within and across plant communities.

Joy Shifflette                                    Undergraduate Research Assistant

Joy is working on the Ecosystem Stochimetry project, aiding in training new lab members, data management and phosphorus analysis

Scott Stark                    Doctoral Student

Scott is interested in how growth constraints shared by all trees interact with ecological processes, specifically competition mediated by light availability, to influence the evolution of life-history traits in tropical forests.

James Stegen                    Doctoral Student

James is interested in linking metabolic theory with food web/trophic dynamics, and specifically in terms of the effects of climate change on food web properties via the effects on plant stoichiometry.

Nate Swenson                    Doctoral Student

Nate is interested in the phylogenetic structure and functional trait composition of tropical plant communities. He is also interested in plant functional trait evolution

Michael D.Weiser                                         Doctoral Student

Mike is interested in theoretical ecology, specifically with understanding how continental scale patterns and processes (e.g., regional diversity) combine with local processes (ecological interactions) to structure biotic assemblages

Melisa Wilson                              Undergraduate EEB Major

Melisa is a research assistant with the plant functional trait and ecosystem flux study at Rocky Mountain Biological Lab. She is also interested in ecological stoichiometry especially in Marine Ecosystems

Dr. Ethan White
                                        Postdoctoral Research Associate

Ethan is an NSF Postdoctoral Fellow in Bioinformatics. He splits his time between the Enquist lab at the University of Arizona & Dr. Jessica Green's lab at the University of California - Merced. His research interests are primarily macroecological, combining theory with empirical analysis to address questions about emergent spatiotemporal patterns of biomass spectra, species diversity & abundance - especially questions focusing on the processes that drive these patterns. In addition, he is actively involved in studying emergent properties in the structure and dynamics of communities, with the goal of understanding community wide constraints on factors such as abundance, biomass, and species richness.

Emeriti

Evan P. Economo                                         Research Technician Emeritus

Evan started in our lab as an undergraduate interested in scaling theory and macroecology. He quickly became a Theory and Computational Technician. He is currently a graduate student in the Section of Integrative Biology at the University of Texas, Austin. Evan still visits the lab from time to time and is involved in several lab collaborations

Pete Gaube       Research Technician Emeritus

Peter was our stellar Lab Technician overseeing the processing and management of the ecosystem stoichiometry data. His interest include the application of macroecology and scaling to the conservation and management of pelagic fisheries, the biodiversity and biogeography of reef fish. Pete spends as much time as possible in the field and is an avid diver, hiker and naturalist. He is the only one I know who can drink german schnapps at 14,000ft., rewire a LiCor-7500, and measure CO2 flux in the same day. Pete is currently in the Master program in Oceanography at

Nova southeastern university

Hanna Coy                            Research Technician Emeritus

Hanna is interested in quantifying energy and material fluxes through plants and ecosystems. She is also interested in theoretical models of speciation and diversity
